United towards a Decarbonized Energy System

Indonesia is in the process of transitioning to a more sustainable and low-carbon energy system. Indonesia has a large potential for renewable energy, particularly in the areas of geothermal, hydro, and biomass energy. However, the country has also faced significant challenges in implementing its energy transition, including a lack of investment in renewable energy, limited grid infrastructure, and a reliance on fossil fuels for power generation.

Achieved Projects

With  its abundance of biomass resources, GIZ supports the Indonesia Bioenergy sector through development of innovative biogas and biomethane pilots, guidelines and knowledge exchange, and a bioenergy potential database (2021) anchored at MEMR.

Bioenergy Key partners: EBTKE/MEMR, Pusdatin ESDM, Bioenergy Association, Private Sector, Academic Institutions

Moving towards green energy, coal mining regions face significant changes. GIZ supports just energy transition planning in two coal regions: East Kalimantan and South Sumatera, and sharing of coal phase out experience across countries.

Just Energy Transition Key partners: SDEMP & KTI/Bappenas, MEMR, IESR, Wuppertal Institute, CAN, ILO, ITUC CSI PB

Society wide dialogues allow for an inclusive exploration on Indonesia's energy future. Discourses with religious, consumer, youth and women groups raise awareness on the benefit and challenges of the energy transition. Journalist training and teaching for the Futureinspire future leaders.

Stakeholder Engagement & Energy Transition Narrative Key partners: KTI/Bappenas, IESR, Civil Society, Media, Academia

Powering more than 600 islands grid is a key challenges for Indonesia's energy transition. Since 2017, GIZ cooperates with PLN to conduct technical gridstudies in three regions. Together with PLN, we trained more than 450 system planners, operators and managers on variables RE grid integration.

Power System Planning & Operation Key partners: PLN Pusdiklat, PLN Div Sys, PLN

Bringing clean energy to islands, GIZ, since 2009, has worked to strengthen the capacity of 1,304 Mini Grids operators and managers, and supported the establishment of 2,959 productive use of energy at community level.

Sustainable Rural Electrication through Energy Mini Grids Key partners: MEMR, as well as MoIA, and CCMAI

To support bridging the financing gap, GIZ provide trainings on RE financing, feasibility, and modelling, and creates awareness on instruments for de-risking of RE investments.

Sustainable Energy Finance Key partners: EBTKE/MEMR, KTI/Bappenas, MoF, Financial Institutions

Aiming to strengthen the regulatory framework, we support MEMR on RE and carbon regulation and work with Bappenas on incorporating the energy transition innational planning. Between 2017-2020, we trained 161 participants from MEMR on planning with high share of RE.

Energy Policy Key partners: EBTKE/MEMR, KTI/Bappenas, IESR, BKF, MoF, DEN

Exploring solutions on how to power Indonesia's islands, 450 attendants are attracted annually to exchange on RE upscaling. As part of the RE Pledge Programme, six multinational companies pledged to install a total of 16 MWp PV.
