From pilots to scale-up: Solar Ice Maker enters the next stage for Indonesia’s fisheries and energy transition
On 18 and 19 September 2025, the GIZ Indonesia/ASEAN, Energy Programme through the SOCOOL Project (Solar Cold Chain for A Green Economy), in collaboration with the Directorate of Various New and Renewable Energy (EBTKE), successfully held the Dissemination of Solar Ice Maker Manufacturing Instructions in Jakarta. This milestone event built on pilot projects in East Nusa Tenggara and Maluku, where the Solar Ice Maker (SIM)—a solar-powered, decentralized cooling innovation—had proven its ability to produce up to 1 ton of ice per day, supporting small-scale fishers and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
📌 What happened?
The event launched the Solar Ice Maker Manufacturing Instruction, shared lessons from pilot projects, and demonstrated the technical and economic feasibility of SIM. It brought together government representatives, industry players, investors, and donors to exchange knowledge, explore financing opportunities, and discuss pathways for replication and commercialization.
This marks GIZ’s continued effort to strengthen partnerships. Having built collaboration with the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) and, this year, with the The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), the initiative took another step toward empowering coastal communities, fostering local manufacturing, and supporting Indonesia’s energy transition and blue economy transformation.
