Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW): East Kalimantan Region

October 13 - November 16

The Indonesian and German governments have engaged in fruitful cooperation in the energy sector for over 30 years, providing technical and financial assistance for various renewable energy initiatives. This partnership covers areas such as expanding renewable energy, transmission grid development, green jobs and skills advancement, and inclusive dialogue with civil society organisations at both national and regional levels. Indonesia is currently undergoing a significant transformation to meet its energy and climate targets, transitioning towards a green economy in line with the Vision Indonesia Emas 2045 and its Net Zero Emissions goal by 2060. To support this national agenda, bilateral cooperation between Germany and Indonesia continues to deliver adaptive, solution-oriented support aligned with the country’s evolving energy landscape and needs.

Under this cooperation framework, the Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) was established as a multi-stakeholder forum that brings together government officials, professionals, private sector actors, academics, and non-state actors to focus on sustainable energy issues. Since its launch in 2022, ISEW has grown into a flagship event under the German-Indonesia Energy Cooperation Hub, jointly organised by Bappenas and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), providing a dynamic platform for dialogue, innovation, and collective action within the German-Indonesian Energy Cooperation. Recognising the regional diversity and complexity of Indonesia’s energy transition, the ISEW Goes Regional (ISEWGR) initiative was introduced, with events planned in Sulawesi and East Kalimantan in 2025. These regional events aim to localise the momentum of ISEW by engaging local governments, energy companies, academic institutions, civil society, and communities to address area-specific energy challenges and link national dialogue with local context, particularly focusing on just energy transition and economic diversification in coal regions.
