MAKASSAR, 30 October 2025 – The Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW): Sulawesi Region was successfully held in Makassar on 29-30 October 2025, marking a pivotal moment in advancing Sulawesi’s transition toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. The two-day event supported Indonesia’s efforts to build a just energy transition and inclusive energy transition while encouraging green economic growth in Sulawesi, an island with some of Indonesia’s most abundant renewable energy resources.
ISEW Goes Regional Sulawesi was co-organized by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), and GIZ Indonesia/ASEAN, with close collaboration from Universitas Hasanuddin.

Andriah Feby Misna, Director of Various New and Renewable Energy at the Ministry of ESDM, emphasized the importance of fiscal policies, climate financing, and regional governments’ active participation in accelerating the transition.
“A sustainable energy transition requires strong support through fiscal policies, climate financing, and growth of the domestic renewable energy industry. The role of local governments in implementing these policies is critical. ISEW Goes Regional is crucial in localizing the momentum of ISEW, providing valuable regional recommendations to be brought to the national level,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Ardian Candraputra, Team Lead of the German-Indonesia Energy Cooperation Hub (Energy Hub) at GIZ Indonesia/ASEAN, highlighted Sulawesi’s vast potential in renewable energy, stating,
“Sulawesi holds more than 40 GW of renewable energy potential. To unlock this, collaboration is key in implementing solutions for decarbonizing electricity, industry, and other sectors contributing to emission reduction.”
With the theme “Transforming Power, Empowering Communities: Local Solutions for Sulawesi’s Clean Energy Future,” the event provided a platform for stakeholders from various sectors to collaborate on innovative strategies that align with both local and national goals for clean energy transition. The discussions focused on integrating renewable energy sources, ensuring energy resilience, and creating green economic opportunities for Sulawesi’s communities.
Highlights of the Event
Day 1 kicked off with discussions around optimizing renewable energy potential in Sulawesi, investment and stakeholder collaboration, and the transformation of the electricity sector. With contributions from government regulators, industry leaders, and NGOs, the event set the stage for actionable insights into how local, national, and international stakeholders can collaborate to achieve Sulawesi’s energy goals.

Day 2 saw a strong focus on youth and academic engagement in energy transition. Universitas Hasanuddin led discussions on the role of students and academic institutions in shaping the future of clean energy in Sulawesi, with direct involvement from industry representatives like Poso Energy, UPDL PLN Makassar, and Yayasan Hadji Kalla. The day emphasized the importance of preparing the next generation for careers in the renewable energy sector and fostering long-term support for Indonesia’s transition to net-zero emissions.

Participants also joined a field visit to the PLTS Pangkajene Kepulauan solar power plant, managed by the regional government of South Sulawesi. The visit showcased the region’s growing capacity to manage renewable energy projects independently and meet local electricity demand.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment to advancing the Just Energy Transition in Sulawesi, laying the groundwork for further collaborations between government, industry, and academia.

With the successful conclusion of ISEW Goes Regional Sulawesi 2025, the series will continue its journey to Makassar, South Sulawesi, where it will focus on developing renewable energy in marine and coastal sectors.
