ENERGY HUB
The Governments of Indonesia and Germany have been engaged in a fruitful collaboration in the energy sector for over three decades—encompassing technical and financial assistance across various renewable energy initiatives as well as inclusive dialogues with civil society organisations, both at the national and regional levels. Concurrently, Indonesia is on a path to achieve its energy and climate targets, with the aim of transitioning to a green economy in line with Vision of Indonesia Emas 2045 and a commitment to achieving Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060 or sooner. The bilateral cooperation between Germany and Indonesia is dedicated to offering continuous support and solutions that align with Indonesia’s energy landscape, national objectives, and emerging challenges.
Established in April 2023, the German-Indonesian Energy Cooperation Hub (Energy Hub) has the mandate to represent Germany and Indonesia’s energy partnership, foster exchanges between German and Indonesian Governments and energy stakeholders as well as provide energy sector expertise in addition to existing projects. While implemented by GIZ and funded by The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) of Germany, the Energy Hub also aims to support implementation organizations under the Indonesian-German cooperation framework.
Overall, the Energy Hub has three areas of intervention: (1) Represent and consolidate Indonesia-German Energy Cooperation; (2) Foster dialogues and exchanges between Indonesian and German Governments and energy stakeholders (i.e., the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF) in August 2023 and Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) in October 2023); and (3) Provide additional energy sector expertise outside of existing project portfolio, e.g., support for JETP. With regard to these mandates, the Energy Hub further works and serves the Indonesian political partners that are strategic partners for technical and financial cooperation projects. Formally anchored with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), and with strong liaison to the Directorate of Electricity, Telecommunication, and Informatics (KTI) of the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) of Indonesia, the Hub further works with all energy related political partners of German cooperation, including other Directorates for Bappenas, the Ministry of Finance, and PLN. Overall, the Energy Hub aims to streamline representation of the broad joint energy portfolio and strengthen exchanges between Indonesia and Germany.
